1968年8月4日、イリノイ州ゲイルズバーグ生まれ。6歳でピアノのレッスンを開始、クラリネット、アルト・サックスを経てハイスクール卒業後にテナー・サックスを吹き始めた。''91年にはセロニアス・モンク・ジャズ・コンペティションで銀賞を獲得。''92年には初リーダー･アルバム『Straight Up』（Delmark）を発表、本拠地をシカゴからニューヨークに移す。以来、現在まで約80枚ものレコーディングを残す一方で積極的にツアーを行い、“世界で最も多忙なジャズ・テナー・サックス奏者”とも形容されている。''04年にリリースされた『ジェントル･バラッズ』（ヴィーナスレコード）はジャズ・ディスク大賞の「銀賞」「制作企画賞」をダブル受賞。その続編となる最新作『ジェントル･バラッズ２』（同）では、さらに深みを増したプレイで新境地を開いている。
I am very pleased to be appearing at the Cotton Club
this March. I''ll be bringing an excellent group with
me that features Dave Hazeltine on piano, John Webber
on bass, and my partner for so many tours in Japan,
Joe Farnsworth on drums.
It''s going to be great to play the same room for four
nights in a row. We''ll really be able to get a sense
of how to "play to the room" and get our best
possible sound.
We have some exciting new material to present. We''ll
be playing some tunes from the recently released
Gentle Ballads 2 as well as some things from a new
recording I did here in NY a few weeks ago with these
same musicians. Of course, we''ll also draw from the
material that has worked so well for me in Japan in
previous years.
I want to thank all of my fans for such tremendous
support, and particularly, for voting me as #2 Tenor
Saxophone in the recent Swing Journal poll. It''s
always an honor to perform for such entusiastic and
loyal fans.
I hope you''ll all come out to see us, and that you''ll
encourage some of your friends who might not be as
familiar with Jazz to come and experience the joy of
exciting and powerfully beautiful live Jazz music.
We are looking forward to the gigs with great
anticipation, and are excited to see all of you March
11-14.
