NYを拠点に活動するR&Bバンド＝クーリーズ・ホット・ボックスのリード・ヴォーカリストで、ソロ・シンガーとしても活動するアンジェラ・ジョンソン。現代R&B界きっての才媛として知られるアンジェラは、幼い頃からヴァイオリンを学び、聖歌隊のディレクターも経験。その後、NY州立大学の仲間とクーリーズ・ホット・ボックスを結成、1990年代後半にリリースされた“Make Me Happy”がDJスピナにリミックスされるなどして世界各国のクラブ・シーンで評判を呼ぶ。日本ではDOUBLEに楽曲を提供したことでも注目を集めたアンジェラは、その後、 2枚のソロ・アルバムを発表。透明感のある凛とした美声に加え、作詞／作曲、プロデュース、アレンジをこなすマルチな才能がより多くの人に知られていく。2008年には、‘70年代ソウルのグルーヴを現シーンに甦らせるべく、アンジェラが制作した楽曲をインディ・ソウル界の実力派シンガーが歌ったコラボレイト盤『A Woman''s Touch Vol.1』（ヴィレッジ・アゲイン）をリリース。過去に行われたモーション・ブルー・ヨコハマでの来日公演も大盛況となったアンジェラのソウルフルなステージは必見だ！

She sent me the track and I automatically liked it. I had been playing with the idea of writing a song about how wondeful life is as opposed to how rough it is which is a regular song topic with me and this track seemed to fit that subject matter perfectly.
彼女からトラックが送られて来て聞いた瞬間から好きだった。“人生はなんてすばらしいの！”というような歌をずっと書きたいと思っていたからこれはまさに私にぴったりだと感じた。

I first heard Angela Johnson on a Cooly''s Hot Box recording while touring with acid jazz turned soul/jazz collective Jazzhole. I was really in to the music and the sound of this band. When Angela released her first solo recording I was immediately a fan! Her unique vocal style, her songwriting ability, and her production skills just moved me.
As the underground soul scene began to grow Angela and I became friends and I really got to know an amazing woman.
Working with Angela Johnson on this new recording was a great experience. Her dedication to excellence and her ability to capture each artist''s unique flair yet still keep her signature production sound is to be commended.
The process of creating with Angela was very organic and free. This is something that I like in terms of making music. Angela invited me to her studio and explained her process and her intention for recording this project. She played several tracks for me and then said, " This is a track that I started but I don''t think I will use it on the project." After I heard the funky groove and the rich harmonic progression, I immediately said to her, "I want to work on this!" Wait on a Maybe is the track that she and I completed. It was really easy sketching through the melody and the lyrics with her. Angela and I worked, chatted, laughed, and just had a good ole time!
I am indeed honored to have been invited to participate in what I think is an incredible project. I am sure that fans will love the flow and the talents of each artist.
Angela, I am so happy to be a part of your musical family and ever more so grateful to be your friend.

初めてアンジェラ・ジョンソンを聞いたのは、acid jazz から soul/jazz へと変貌を遂げたJazzholeとのツアー中にCooly''s Hot Boxとのレコーディングの時だった。ボクは彼女たちの音楽に本当に魅了されたよ。アンジェラがソロで始めてリリースした時なんか即座にファンになったね。彼女のユニークなヴォーカル・スタイル、作曲、仕上がり具合には、ただただ、感動したよ。アンダーグランドでのソウル・シーンが広がるにつれて、アンジェラとは仲良くなり、彼女が素晴らしい女性だということを改めて知らされた。
この新しいアルバムで彼女とともにしたことは、素晴らしい経験になった。彼女の尊敬すべき点は、高いレベルを追求する努力やその姿勢、そして、それぞれのアーティストの個性を十分に引き出しながらも、自分の色を取り込んでいる素晴らしさ。
アンジェラと何かをつくる時は、とても自然で自由。そんな姿勢がボクは大好きだ。彼女のスタジオに招かれ今回のアルバムの意図を説明してくれた。彼女はいくつかの音源を聞かせてくれ、そして”この音源は今回のアルバムには多分使わないわ“と言った。でも、そのファンキーで見事に調和した音源を聞かされ、即座に”これでやりたい！と言った。そして、”Wait on a Maybe” を二人で完成させた。彼女と一緒に仕事をすると、本当に仕事がし易い。おしゃべりし、笑い、素晴らしい時間を過ごせた。
今回の彼女のアルバムに参加出来て、本当に名誉に思う。アルバムに参加したアーティストや、構成を好きになる事間違いないと思うよ。アンジェラ、ボクは、あなたと音楽をともに奏で、友達でいられる事をハッピーに思うよ。
